The Turkana Basin Institute

The Turkana Basin Institute is a collaborative, international, multi-disciplinary organization which facilitates scientific research in the Turkana Basin region of northern Kenya.

The Turkana Basin Institute comprises two research stations at Lake Turkana, an office in Nairobi and a home in the Anthropology Department at the University of Stony Brook in New York.

The field stations at Turkwel and Ileret, on the west and eastern shores of Lake Turkana respectively, provide accommodation, logistical support, research laboratories and storage to scientists and students. A community outreach program is run by TBI supporting the local communities through a mobile clinic, scholarships and bursaries. The Turkana Basin Institute runs a field school twice a year at lake Turkana, a full semester abroad, taught by scientists and experts in their field.

Scientists from around the world attend a conference at TBI's Turkwel research facility.
